Partnership for a Tobacco Free Cerro Gordo County
Meeting Summary December 15, 2009

Location:  North Iowa Area Community College – Activity Center

Attendees:  Katelyn Sheldon, Jay Pedelty, Penny Bennett, Donna Orton, Penny McCaslin, Liz Conley, Michele Appelgate, Brandi Evers, Callie Odegaard, Tammy Bryant.

1.  Welcome and Introductions 
2.  Summary Scribe:  Tammy appointed Penny Bennett.
3.  Great American Smoke Out (GASO):

  • Tammy was sick – Penny McCaslin did an excellent job!
  • Was also Home For The Holidays – was a great partnership and turn out!
  • At Southbridge Mall – Venture, Clear Lake, Newman & Mason City kids participated – 20 to 25 total.
    • Had EPA Display, table with information, kids did posters and walked around mall and outside at stoplight.  Kids did a great job interacting and engaging people.  Also had the smoker and kid display to show second hand smoke.
    • Emphasis was on Smoke-Free Home and Car Pledge.
    • Partners that helped out: American Cancer Society, Prairie Ridge & Youth Task Force. BSN Student University of Iowa.
    • Colonial Inn – Ventura, Whiskey Creek – Mason City & McDonald’s all had over 100 Smoke-Free Home & Car placemats that they put out that day and continued until all was gone!!
    • Letters to the Editor & Guest Editorials: done by Tammy and Michele Appelgate (CGDPH).  American Cancer Society also did a quarter page ad and editorial in the Globe.
    • Had great media coverage.  Check out CGDPH website for photos and more information.

     Next big event will be Kick Butt Days (KBD) the end of March – Maybe at NIACC

4.  PIO-Media Update - Michele

  • Michele distributed handouts with information that is being used on Channel 4 re: candy & fruit flavored cigarettes.  Slides will change each quarter.
  • Radio ads: ran same ads that produced last year, just changed tag line at end to promote Smoke-Free Home and Car Pledge.  Spent half budget of $1100 on ads.  Hoping to use other half around KBD in March (if still there – budget cuts). 
  • Fox 47 TV has offered free PSA. Do on Smoke-Free Home and Car Pledge.
  • JEL Coalition is now on Twitter and Face book.  Katie Sheldon is doing a Face Book page: Cerro Gordo County JEL, 16 people so far!

5. JEL Happenings

  • Youth JEL Summit Summary:  Katie Sheldon attend the summit where they spoke about: how to talk to the legislature, to the media, how to plan big street marketing events, spoke about chewing tobacco & mouth cancer and Victor Denoble spoke.
  • Regional Summit Summary: Katie mentioned there were fewer students who attended – 11 total.  They organized a carnival at one of Spencer’s malls and sold tickets to different games.  People who attend the carnival could win cool prizes: JEL Backpacks, T-Shirts, Buttons, etc.
  • Ventura, MCHS, Clear Lake and Newman students put in a lot of time on the GASO event.
  • All schools are planning to do events at basketball games.

6.  Smoke Free Violations - Tammy

  • NONE – have had 3 complaints this year.
  • State level began with 100 to 200 complaints and are down to 15 to 20 now!
  • Call the state with a complaint: 1-888-944-2247  or website: www.iowasmokefreeair.gov  

7.  Schedule for quarter meetings is as follows:

  • March 16, 2010 - @ NIACC
  • June 15, 2010

  • CGDPH – Overall tobacco budget has to cut 5% of budget!!

10.  Latest Tobacco News:

  • Katie Sheldon read a hate letter that was received at the State Level!  Katie was able to respond to the author.
  • Michigan going tobacco free.
  • Tobacco Free Kids Website: (www.tobaccofreekids.org) Broken Promise to Our Children – 1998 State Tobacco Settlement 11 Years Later!  (not living up to tobacco settlement)
    • Tammy passed out several handouts about how spending or not spending settlement money.
    • That adult and youth cigarette use has leveled out.
    • Youth smokeless tobacco (chew) is on the rise!  Cheaper and easier to get away with!
  • New JEL Logo: Big X (means Cross-out Lies!) with JEL in new font!
    • Have new pens, window clings, tattoos, shirts, etc.
